Description of Practice
I am a family lawyer who has worked with divorcing families for almost 35 years. There is nothing pleasant about getting a divorce or breaking up with your significant other. It can be very difficult. Are you feeling anger, hurt, pain, guilt, shame, or sadness? You are not alone. So, how can you, who are going through one of the worst experiences of your life, be expected to make decisions that will affect you for the rest of your life? You are at your worst when you need to be at your best. I can help. I will explain the legal issues that you and your significant other need to talk about… And, I can help you talk about them in a safe, respectful environment. This doesn’t mean that mediation won’t be free from emotions, but wouldn’t you rather meet with your significant other in a private conference room than in a courtroom? Couples that work out their own agreements emerge with fewer scars than those who fight tooth and nail. They save time, they save money, and most importantly, they are able to remain civil to each other. What if you and your significant other are getting along, in spite of the decision to separate? I can help you by giving you legal information to make certain all of your legal issues are being addressed.
I am on the Minnesota Supreme Court List of Neutrals for both family law and general civil matters. I am a practicing member of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) and a member of the Family Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association.I have also presented seminars on the subject of divorce and mediation. I am certified to conduct “Social” and “Financial” Early Neutral Evaluations. I am a member of the Court of Appeals Family Law Mediation panel.
I have mediated hundreds of cases since I began my mediation practice in 1989. Most involve family law issues. Of those, most involved custody and parenting time issues. But, I have also mediated maintenance (alimony) and property settlement cases.
Undergraduate: Macalester College (Summa Cum Laude) St. Paul, Minnesota Law School: University of Minnesota Minneapolis, Minnesota
I try to facilitate a settlement. I will share with each party the strengths and weaknesses of their case, but I hesitate to predict what a judge might do. I am a friendly, approachable person. I don't try to scare or intimidate people. I enjoy listening to people and finding out their stories.
I charge a very reasonable hourly fee. I invite you and your partner to make an appointment to see me for a free consultation in which I talk about my fees and my approach to mediation.
Prior to founding Mediation Services of Southern Minnesota, I was a 30 year partner at the law firm, Chesley, Kroon, Harvey and Carpenter.
