Description of Practice

As a member of the New York Association for Collaborative Practice, we provide comprehensive support as a Child Specialist, Individual Coach, and Neutral Coach. As a Child Specialist & former Adjunct Professor in Child Development, I guide separating parents to communicate and co-parent more effectively to protect the children and important relationships from the emotional impact of the transition. Because of my background in Child Development, I am well equipped to help parents devise a sensible parenting plan tailored to the developmental & special needs of the children. As an Individual Coach, I help clients prepare for collaborative meetings emotionally so they can hear one another & express their needs in a way that will be valued. As a neutral coach, I help clients prepare for collaborative meetings and keep the process moving forward efficiently & respectfully, including diffusing difficult emotions that may arise. Who Choose Us Separation and divorce can be a time of great emotional, financial, & personal turmoil for individuals and families. I have a unique set of interdisciplinary skills and expertise as a psychotherapist, mediator, child specialist, & divorce coach, which I can draw on in the session regardless of my specific role. I am committed to helping families stay out of court and manage difficult emotions that may otherwise derail the process. I am passionate about keeping the children's best interests front and center and helping parents learn to co-parent as effectively as possible to minimize the negative impact on the family.

Professional Background

As Director of the Stein Mediation and Family Center, I have substantial, intensive training in mediation from New York University, the Ackerman Institute, and Community Mediation Services, Inc., and I have also completed intensive training in Couples and Family Therapy at the Ackerman Institute. I have also taught Child Development for years at the university level. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

Experience

I have years of experience in divorce and family mediation. In addition to my training as a Divorce Mediator, I find that my background as a Child Specialist allows me to bring into the room, if both parents are interested, helpful information about the best interests of the children that are relevant to a parenting schedule or parenting plan. Likewise, as a seasoned individual, family, and couples therapist, as well as a Divorce Coach with Collaborative Divorce, I can often help couples get through difficult emotions that may emerge during the mediation process which may otherwise derail the process.

Degrees

I have a Ph.D. in Public Health (behavioral sciences) from UCLA, as well as an M.S.W. in Social Work (clinical emphasis) from NYU. My dissertation was in the area of child sexual assault, and I have published extensively in the field of psychological sequelae of adult and child sexual assault.

Approach

Mediation is about helping people understand the relevant issues and advocate a solution that respects different needs and works for everyone. I am committed to doing this in a respectful, sensitive, and impartial way. I am knowledgeable about how the courts would likely resolve an issue, though I am most interested in helping people understand and explain their real needs--as well as their children's--so that they can craft a solution that is right for them. I will ensure that all voices are heard and considered in any potential agreement. As a clinician, I am also sensitive to the emotional hot spots that tend to break things down in negotiation and will help individuals find a way around them so that they can reach a solution that will work now--and in the future.

Fees

Because we are committed to the mediation process both philosophically and ethically, we have very reasonable rates and use a sliding scale fee. Our usual rates are $ 350 per hour, which is below the norm. We have lower fee slots available on a sliding scale according to income.
